Target Tuesday: MUST HAVES from JasonWu Collection

Ok, seriously I really need to stop lusting over Jason Wu's collection for Target but I can't! There's something about the sharp lines and girlie flair that give me every time I take yet another quick peak at the preview. But in the meantime I'll wait like the rest of us until February 5th to view the collection in stores (I'm thinking of setting my alarm clock to wake up early that day. Haha. Here are a few of my favourite pieces that I put together for my Jason Wu Lust List. I really hope I don't oversleep and miss out on the pleated skirt and dress!

Jason Wu for Target Preview Event

Ok, I know I should be watching the political debate right now but there's something going on on the other side of the spectrum....Jason Wu's private viewing is happening right now and the collection is super cute! (as if this was a surprise). The over night sensation in 2009 after First Lady Obama wore one of his gowns to the many inaugural balls is now partnering with Target to create an uber, ultra chic and affordable version of his designer label.

The items are too cute in every way!

Poetry in Motion with Sir Joshua Bennett

The fusion of fashion and poetry has always been right up my alley....

Well if you didn't see my tweets already, yesterday I had the pleasure of escorting spoken word artist Joshua Bennett for our Expressions of King's Legacy event. Truly an amazing experience beyond words as our keynote speaker Dr. Cornel West took center stage after the Garth Fagan Dance Company opened the show and graced us with their presence. You may have seen Dr. West featured on the Matrix if you can remember the cool dude with the salt and peppered 'fro. (Dr. West definitely gave me a BIG hug and call me Sister Lisa:)
Dr. Cornel West with my friend Nolan

The two-day experience was not only a reminder of King's Legacy but an inspiration to push ourselves creatively to write and to love one another. Joshua is actually one of Ralph Lauren's Rugby Poets Club and has performed at the White house for President Obama along with performances for the Sundance Film Festival, the NAACP Image Awards, and The Kennedy Center's "American Playlist." Throughout the whole day Joshua displayed nothing but humility and grace with an occasional pop-in-lock routine throughout the day and embraced me as his friend! We even raced a few times unintentionally and even though my legs are longer he still won. Haha. I even got a chance to meet Tamara who was an inspiration to our Deaf community and the muse for Joshua's poem Tamara's Opus. It was definitely one of those ohmygoshilovemyjob kinda days:) Both are truly blessed

Check out his poem entitled "Tamara's Opus"

I call this the Bennett Sandwich..haha:)

The Workshop at Macy's

Fashion retail giant, Macy's continues to support community businesses by offering a successful program entitled The Workshop at Macy’s for the second year in a row. After yesterday’s conversation with the creators of the program Shawn Outler, Group VP of Multicultural Merchandising and Vendor Development, and Erin Wilson, Director for Multicultural Vendor Development, I got a chance to understand the corporation's commitment to vendor opportunities for multicultural and women-owned businesses.  The development program is an annual 4 ½ day training course hosted at Macy's headquarters in New York City which provides a unique learning opportunity to gain industry knowledge from retail experts and specialists for free. The program educates a combination of twenty women and multicultural business professionals to strategically identify niche markets within their own companies in order to succeed in the fashion industry.

After completing the vendor development program last year, four businesses have been selected to partner with Macy’s as certified vendors. Their goods are scheduled to launch this spring as a part of the retailer's product offerings. The program continues to nurture the small business community while highlighting fresh talent and innovative products by creating a pipeline into the community to develop meaningful business relationships and continued mentorship.

Many thanks to Shawn and Erin from the Macy's corporate team for reaching out to me and for taking the time to speak to me regarding this great initiative. In order to be considered for the program check out the link here. The deadline to submit is January 22, 2012.

Target Tuesdays: Back to Basics-> Colored Denim 'n Trench Coats

PhysicalCanvas: Back to Basics 5
Oh lovely dayyyyyyyyy! Yes, another week of Target Tuesday keeps on rolling in good things in the New Year. But what is up with this weather lately?! The weather has been ridiculously good to us during January (which is not surprising to me at all since it's always very nice around my birthday for the last 5 years). It's almost like a faux spring day when the grass is getting greener and the weather is starting to perk up after a yucky winter. But we haven't had a winter really. Who knows...

I'm honestly glad that the weather decided to reflect my mood (for once) because I had this really great idea to brighten up my wardrobe during this time of year (and quite honestly I was almost scared to commit to this outfit if there was snow on the ground! Not a pretty pic at all). Target has been rolling out the summer stuff before the holiday season ended and I love it! I know "colour blocking" has been up and down the blogosphere, runways, and forecasting sites but I can never get enough of bold prints in one outfit. To me it's not a trend...it's just the style of dress that fits me the most. This outfit makes me feel so colourful...skittles ain't got nothing on me today!

I LOVE C O L O U RRRRRRR!

A Year Older, Three Decades Later

lisa in 30s blazer
Soooo..today is my birthday. There really should be a question mark after that because I'm not exactly sure how three decades have managed to slip by me so quickly. Ughhhhhh it always comes up faster than I would like it to. But to be honest I've never celebrated my birthday right on the actual day because it's kind of at an awkward time of year. It's too late to celebrate it with the holiday festivities of Christmas, and a wee bit too early to party it up during New Years so after coming off of a holiday high I always find myself thinking Darnnnnnn not again, tomorrow is my birthday!

Like every person born in, near, or right after December we ask ourselves why couldn't I have been born in the summer?!! But as much as I hate the cold, the God above has sent me great weather for the last 5 years on my birthday as if it were spring! Today has been a blessed day and I shouldn't be down at all...(even though I was earlier. haha) I have my health and a great family that loves me and I've been spared any from any trauma of any kind. So today since I didn't plan on doing anything I'm just going to wing it and enjoy the time with my hubster and see what the night brings {{^_^}}.

Yesterday my hubster was in a creative mood and made this graphic for me. I was wondering why he banned me from our home office! It looks like a cool Mariah Carey album cover! I loved how he included my age in the graphic because I refuse to conceal my age! It's nothing to be ashamed about. Now only if I could sing...

Cheers to the 20's behind me and the 30's before me because...
glowing 30
...I'm looking good at 30!!!

v-Style-Paula Patton: How to Style a Spy

Ever since me and my hubster went on a date (yes we still date;) over the holiday break  to see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol I can't help but think what I would wear if I were the spy?? Jane Carter played by none other than Paula Patton was enough inspiration to get me going in the right direction. Isn't she just gorgeous?! (i <3 her hubster).

Naturally, Paula Patton is my v-Style inspiration for the week! I haven't done a v-Style post in a while so click here for more details. In a nutshell, it is a post that features how I would style a celebrity if I was given and unlimited budget for a day without the limitations of a small budget. Who wouldn't want a job with massive access to clothes and cash? Me [^_^]
The look below is definitely for a spy in the making...
  • very minimal accessories to carry (to make room for her spy gear, of course)
  • motorcycle inspired leather and wool jacket
  • wedged shoes (with rubber grip so she doesn't break an ankle while drop kickin' the bad guys)
  • oversized watch to make sure her timing is just right
  • stretch leather pants to seduce and destroy!!
Ok maybe that last part was overkill but I would sooo rock this if I were a spy or if I could afford it-whichever comes first. Kudos to Paula for making it look so easy!

Target Tuesdays: Pleather 'n Knit Pleasures

Pleather Jacket
Oyi! It's the first Tuesday of 2012!! And I must say it feels good to be starting the year off right and on schedule for the day. I'm sure a Tuesday will slip past me sometime but for the moment I'm just glad that I got my butt together to put a post together for today's outfit. Shall we proceed?

Today's outfit is a blend of a pleather jacket and a knit mini skirt that I found in Target at the end of December. Not only do I love the contrast in material, but also in the colour. The cognac jacket with the gray and white look pretty cool to me. The blouse underneath almost gives it a bad girl preppy look, eh? *shrugs*

Hopefully this year I can expand this post to beyond clothing to beauty and cosmetics. We'll see {^-^}
What was the last thing that you bought from Target? Send me your pics so that I can feature you!

Blogger Call: What Works for your Blog?

Since the beginning of my blog I realized that I really need to utilize social media tools and fahion communities to partner with other people and find other opportunities but let's face it, it is wayyy too consuming to be a member of Tumblr, Chictopia, Lookbook, StumbleUpon, and every other community out there! I would literally need to set aside a ton of time just to upload pictures after uploading them to my blog! I know some of you do, so kudos to you. So I have decided to focus on just a few and will begin to add StumbleUpon within my social networks. I see many of you are pretty successful at increasing blog traffic and I wanted to know if you mind sharing what works best for you. Please let me know! Or feel free to email me at physicalcanvas[at]gmail.com

Can't wait to hear from each of you. Hopefully I will be continuing this blogging journey to pour out my creative ideas in my spare time [^-^]
