Style Inspiration: Mrs. O

I am so fascinated with our First Lady's style choices! Mrs. Obama's wardrobe keeps the average woman guessing with every outfit: "who is she wearing? where did she get that? I wonder if that will look good on me too!" She always has fun with her clothes and doesn't take herself too seriously. I love the fact that she always incorporates pieces with great colour! Yesterday she was at the Stansted Airport as the President headed for the G8 Summit in Deauville,France wearing this purple ombre dress and coat by Peter Som's Fall 2010 Collection.

Pictured here at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School at the University of Oxford, Mrs. O wore a white tunic with slim black pants and a belt that I would love to add to my closet for this summer! The belt is by Alexander McQueen and adds quite a bit of class to what could have been an ordinary outfit. I can't take my eyes off of the belt! I think we need a closer look...

I know who's closet I would love to raid!

Target Tuesdays: Flowy Dresses and Cropped Jackets

After a two week hiatus, Target Tuesdays are back! Embrace your inner hippie with this floral print dress in warm tones of deep purples and neutral accents that can easily be a great addition to your summer wardrobe. Since summer is still in its premature phase with its bizarre amount of rain storms and breezy afternoons, pair a cute cropped jacket with your floor length dress before completely going sleeveless (it's not that warm yet unfortunately). For additional warmth, throw on a pair of leggings underneath to combat the cooler evenings.

Side note: If you realized it already, I changed my hair over the weekend and went back to my 'default' hairstyle as I like to call it. I've been wearing it like this for a few years and something keeps pulling me back to this style. I still miss the blonde though...who knows, maybe I'll put some colour back into it when the summer warms up!

The Beginning of Festival Fun

Yesterday marked the last day of the 10-day Lilac Festival in Upstate New York. The annual festival is the kick off to a series of very cool festivals throughout the summer and is inspired by more than 500 unique lilacs that bloom every year around this time. Unfortunately, the festival is always a washout especially with the abundance of rain that we've been receiving that should go on record as being the rainiest period of the decade. But if you don't mind throwing on a pair of rain boots to trek through the mud puddles, it can be a great place to get your favorite carnival food like the fried dough with mounds of powdered sugar and cinnamon to Rochester's famous "garbage plate" by Nick Tahou's (the dish isn't as nearly disguising as it sounds). I was able to bypass the rain by taking these pictures a few days leading up to the fest and got some great shots. I love the way my nude lipstick and make-up mesh with the pinks and peachy tones of my outfit.

A bad fall

So I literally had a bad fall... off the face of the planet-no blogging, Facebook, or Twitter updates. Yikes. If you want to be totally disconnected from the world you don't have to find a rock to live under anymore-just ignore your favourite social media sites and watch your tv shows on hulu to avoid commercials that may give away any world event updates. I completely missed the prediction that the world was going to end at 6pm in every time zone, Beyonce's video debut "Run the World" (which the fashion and dancing are both mind blowing!), and the Macy's sale email blasts that are piled up in my account *delete delete delete*  But I'm back!! (not that anyone cares. lol) Over the past few weeks, I was seriously consumed with life's events and couldn't get a chance to express any thoughts, or opinions on my blog. But I have tons of pics for all of the Target Tuesday posts that I missed and pics of my outfits to post so keep following as I have fun spilling out my creative side back onto digital pages of this blog!

Blues, Greens, and Limes: Wide Leg Pants and Turbans

A few weeks ago I came across this amazing fabric that I intended to make into a pencil skirt, since I have a hard time finding fitted skirts in my size (most places sell clothing too big) but before I cut the fabric into pieces I just had to make this cool turban! I love it because I tied it to form pleats toward the front to give it a fanning effect.

It has finally stopped raining (it was the rainiest month we ever had) and it's becoming consistently sunny outside, so my mood as been improving with the weather ever so nicely. I cannot wait for summer festivals and warm nights when I can free myself from a cumbersome jacket!

Special Day for Moms

I've been with my mom all day today and I just wanted to post a quick picture of my stylish mother! She's such a great person inside and out and has been an incredible mother to her three girls and to all those who have come in contact with her. There are so many pictures that I can post of her but this one exudes the confidence and style of a twenty-something year old fashionista before the word ever came into play.

Cheers to all of the mothers who have sacrificed everything for your children's success! Thanks mom for your support in everything that I do and for your godly advice when I needed it!

Here's a more recent picture of my mom and her three girls.

Happy Mother's day!

Balance

"Difficulties are opportunities to better things; they are stepping-stones to greater a experience… When one door closes, another one always opens; as a natural law it has to balance."
-Brian Adams

Clear and simplistic enough to understand, this quote needs no further explanation. I've seen the culmination of my past experiences transform me into a better individual through personal challenges and external obstacles. This quote isn't telling me [or you] anything I don't already know or have experienced for myself. It merely serves as a reminder and a testament to the barriers that once existed.

Vintage dress: $12.99

I found this dress a few weeks ago in a consignment store when I "lost" my way home from work one day. [Shopping detours are the best] The lime colour caught my eye enough to pluck it from the racks of oversized blazers and early 90s power suits even though it didn't look like much on the hanger. I almost thought it wouldn't fit until I zipped up the back and realized that it clung perfectly to my frame. It's a tragedy that they don't make clothes like they use to anymore, isn't it?

Target Tuesdays: Coachella Inspiration

Target Tuesdays are becoming overly exciting for me as the weather starts to warm up and I am able to share with you how to put together great looks for incredible prices. For me, its a thrill-seeking experience to feature refreshing looks, as a personal style challenge to myself in order to share it with others. I pulled this look together in less than ten minutes as Target was closing its registers and dimming the lights to shut business down for the day. It must be my visual display instincts kicking in when I dressed an extensive amount of mannequins in record time. Needless to say 'body parts', hangers, and piles of clothes lay at my feet every time...I certainly work better with time restraints and a surplus of options to choose from.

Inspired by Coachella, the California music festival that drew hundreds of music lovers and party goers a few weeks ago, this look is right on target for any summer time occasion. Tapping into my inner hippy side, these patch work cut off shorts are the perfect compliment to my oversized hat and wedged heels.

I wore this outfit last Sunday when I went out with my sweetheart to test his new camera at this great location. It's not too far from my house, but its remote enough to give you the feeling that you're beyond the lines of the city boarders into the country side. We had quite a few run ins with nature as they were not too happy that we were invading their territory. A beaver poked its head out of the water and rested on a stack of weeds as the geese went into attack mode to protect their young as we walked past them to get to the wooden bridge. My legs are pretty long, but I don't think I'm confident enough to outrun an aggressive, territorial goose. Yikes. Besides the goose incident, I think this will be my new hang out spot to start writing poetry again....hopefully, fingers crossed.

Special thanks to my better half for taking these incredible pictures and for encouraging me to start blogging!

Happy Birthday Lucas!!!

The Met Gala

Madonna, Freida Pinto, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, Ann Wintour, and many others are hitting the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Benefit red carpet right now (!!!), otherwise known as the Met Ball. Forget the Oscars, forget Fashion week (ok just for a minute) because this is the most fashionable night of thee entire year. This year's celebratory occasion hosts the exhibit known as "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty," displaying the collection works of the late designer who tragically took his life at the age of 40 in 2010. I would love for a designer to be my fairy godmother and lace me up in a dress, just so that I could be on the red carpet for this very special night. And I pinky swear that I would be back by midnight. Promise.
